California governor rejects bill to give unemployment checks to striking workers

California won’t be giving unemployment checks to workers on strike SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- California won't be giving unemployment checks to workers on strike, with Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom vetoing a bill Saturday that had been inspired by high-profile work stoppages in Hollywood and the hotel industry. Newsom, a Democrat, says he supports workers and often benefits from campaign contributions from labor unions. But he said he vetoed this bill because the fund the state uses to pay unemployment benefits will be nearly $20 billion in debt by the end of the year. “Now is not the time to increase costs or incur this sizable debt,” Newsom wrote in a veto message. The fund the state uses to pay unemployment benefits is already more than $18 billion in debt. That’s because the fund ran out of money and had to borrow from the federal government during the pandemic, when Newsom ordered most businesses to close and caused a massive spike in unemployment. The fund was also beset by mass

Vivek Ramaswamy’s TikTok presence draws young voters' attention -- and GOP rivals' attacks

Image
Nikky Haley lit into him at this week's second Republican primary debsate. It started with a short clip of him dancing with social media influencer Jake Paul and what Vivek Ramaswamy called a vision to better engage with younger voters. It's continued with him documenting his travels on the campaign trail, showing time spent with his two young sons and responding to commenters. However, the GOP presidential candidate's presence on the popular app TikTok has put a spotlight on his past Business dealings and comments, drawing criticism from his rivals about his lack of political experience, as leaders on both sides of the aisle grapple with how or whether to use TikTok because of its links to the Chinese government. On the GOP debate stage in Simi Valley, California, Wednesday night, Ramaswamy's TikTok presence was the target of aggressive attacks from his primary rivals, including Nikki Haley, who cut off Ramaswamy to shout, "We can't trust you with TikTok,&q

Emile Smith Rowe offers exciting glimpse of life as Arsenal's third midfielder

Image
FROM THE GTECH COMMUNITY STADIUM - Arsenal are still trying to find a way to effectively play through midfield without Granit Xhaka. Could you imagine that sentence at any point during the first six years of his seven-season stay in north London? The Switzerland international was one of the unlikely heroes of the Gunners' Premier League title charge last season, not only bringing bite and elegance to the starting XI, but precious goal contributions - seven goals, seven assists. Xhaka opted to back away from fresh contract talks with Arsenal in order to return to the Bundesliga with Bayer Leverkusen this summer. Few predicted Mikel Arteta would choose to replace him with Kai Havertz. After all, the German had hardly impressed in three seasons at Chelsea, mostly playing as a busy but misfiring striker. Shifting him into Xhaka's role has so far proved fanciful. The kindest way of spinning Havertz's performances so far are he has hardly been of direct detriment to his team. He&

Texas law that restricted drag shows declared unconstitutional

SB 12, a law in Texas that restricts drag performances, has been declared unconstitutional by a federal judge. A federal judge has issued a permanent injunction against a Texas bill that restricted "sexually oriented performances" and has been criticized for limiting public drag performances in the state. U.S. District Judge David Hittner said the law is an "unconstitutional restriction on speech" and "violates the First Amendment as incorporated to Texas by the Fourteenth Amendment of the United States Constitution." A similar law in Tennessee, the first state to restrict drag performances in public, was also blocked and ruled unconstitutional. The law was set to go into effect on Friday, Sept. 1, but a preliminary injunction halted its enforcement. "LGBTQIA+ Texans, venue owners, performers, and our allies all came together to uphold free expression in our state — and we won," the ACLU of Texas said in a social media post. "This work isn’

Here’s when your favorite show may return as writers strike is on the verge of ending

A tentative agreement between striking screenwriters and Hollywood studios offers some hope that the industry’s dual walkouts may be over soon LOS ANGELES -- A tentative agreement between striking screen writers and Hollywood studios offers some hope that the industry's dual walkouts may soon be over. But when will your favorite shows return ? Well, it's complicated. First, the agreement needs to pass two key votes — one involving the boards of the screenwriters union, followed by a vote by the 11,500 members themselves. Then there's the fact that 65,000 film and television actors remain on strike . That work stoppage will prevent many projects from return ing to normal. Certain paused productions such as “Deadpool 3," “Yellowjackets” and the next film from Quentin Tarantino will still have to wait on actors to reach a deal with studios. Once the contract is approved, work will resume more quickly for some writers than others. Late-night talk shows were the first to

Migrants hoping to reach US continue north through Mexico by train amid historic migration levels

A group of about 5,000 mostly Venezuelan migrants hoping to make it to the U.S. spent three days in the Mexican town of Irapuato waiting for a train that many in the group worried would never come IRAPUATO, Mexico -- As a train roared in the distance, some 5,000 mostly Venezuelan mi grant s hoping to make it to the U.S. snapped into action. Families with young children sleeping on top of cardboard boxes and young men and women tucked away in tents under a nearby bridge scrambled to pack their things. After the train arrived on the outskirts of the central Mexican city of Irapuato, some swung their bodies over its metal trailers with ease, while others tossed up bags and handed up their small children swaddled in winter coats. “Come up, come up,” migrants atop the train urged those below. Others yelled, “God bless Mexico!” After three days of waiting for the train that many in the group worried would never come, this was their ticket north to Mexico's border with the United States

High-speed trains begin making trip between Orlando and Miami

A privately owned high-speed passenger train service has been launched between Florida’s two biggest tourist hubs ORLANDO, Fla. -- A privately owned high-speed passenger train service launched Friday between Florida's two biggest tourist hubs. The Brightline train is a $5 billion bet by owner Fortress Investment Group that eventually 8 million people annually will take the 3.5-hour, 235-mile (378-kilometer) trip between Miami and Orlando — about 30 minutes less than the average drive. The company is charging single riders $158 round-trip for business class and $298 for first-class, with families and groups able to buy four round-trip tickets for $398. Thirty-two trains will run daily. Brightline, which began running its neon-yellow trains the 70 miles (112 kilometers) between Miami and West Palm Beach in 2018, is the first private intercity passenger service to begin U.S. operations in a century. Friday's launch of the Miami-Orlando line was marred by the death of a pedestrian

Riders have been “too hard” on India MotoGP track over safety concerns

Image
This weekend marks the first ever Indian GP for MotoGP, which will be staged at the same Buddh International Circuit which hosted Formula 1 from 2011 to 2013. The track required upgrade works to improve safety , though these were only completed recently and several riders felt unease about the proximity of barriers to the circuit at some corners. This led to the riders uniting over the matter, with a vote set to take place after all of them had walked the circuit on whether it is safe enough to race on. Tech3’s Espargaro has already explored the circuit and feels the work done to it is satisfactory. “I walked it two times yesterday and ran it one time this morning,” he said on Thursday. “Honestly, I think we were a little bit too hard before coming here to see what really was. I think it is much better than what we all expected. “About the safety, for sure there are some things that can be improved. But I believe in all the race tracks in the world
